b. Donovan Harris, c.1960, Western Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies. After leaving school he worked as a welder, following in the footsteps of many legendary reggae performers. In his leisure time he went to the local dances, and when given the opportunity to chat on the sound, the enthusiastic audience response inspired him to pursue a career as a DJ. He initially decided to call himself Peter Ranking, but discovered that another DJ used that name and had enjoyed a minor hit with ‘Sukiyaki’. Harris was a resident DJ on the sound Metromedia and adopted the pseudonym Peter Metro. He recorded his debut outing, ‘Jamaica Salute’, and was soon found voicing a number of recordings for a variety of producers. An unusual characteristic of his recordings was his use of Spanish, which won him many fans in South America, and this is particularly notable on ‘Water Jelly’ and the introduction to ‘Fisherman Connection’. Working with Yellowman and Fathead, his popularity increased following the release of ‘Water Pumpee’. He also recorded a version of Michael Jackson’s ‘The Girl Is Mine’ in combination with Yellowman, which became a big hit. Metro’s success inspired his brother Squiddly Ranking to become resident DJ on the Gemini Sound System, where he frequently clashed with Yellowman. Always an innovative performer, Metro recorded ‘Yardie And Cockney’ in combination with a white English DJ, Dominic, and is acknowledged as the first multilingual toaster. The duo gave a respectable performance at the 10th Reggae Sunsplash festival, but the novelty was short-lived. Metro re-emerged as the veteran DJ on UB40’s 1998 Dancehall compilation.
