Back To Ebombeni (Deluxe)

Back To Ebombeni (Deluxe)

The Durban trio Omagoqa take a trip back to their roots on Back to Ebombeni. The minibus taxi, known as ibomba (“ebombeni” translates to “in the ibomba”), is known for playing high-energy, unreleased gqom music—and the trio met in one. Their project recalls the music they were making at the time: dark synths and thumping basslines punctuated by digital chants. But Omagoqa—made up of Andile “Ma_A” Mazibuko, Franco “KB” Makhathini, and Njabulo “Chase” Sibiya—have since progressed. Their sound today is embellished with elements of EDM by way of engulfing, buzzing and strobing synths, eerie pads, thwacking 808s and robust percussion. They’ve dubbed this new iteration of gqom “isqinsi”. The Back to Ebombeni (Deluxe) comes with five new songs, two of which feature the trio’s childhood friends, Chumza (“GWY”) and Da Lego (“Suka”).
