About Delroy Wilson
A prodigy at Clement “Coxsone” Dodd’s Studio One in Kingston, Delroy Wilson recorded his first single for the legendary Jamaican producer in 1961 at the age of 13. Mixing ska rhythms with Motown-like soul vocals, Wilson yielded a number of massive ska and rocksteady hits, most notably the Lee “Scratch” Perry-written “Joe Liges.” After working with Dodd, Wilson continued to follow the high-profile producer circuit, working with Bunny Lee and Joe Gibbs. In 1972, Jamaican politician Michael Manley chose Wilson’s “Better Must Come” as his official campaign anthem. In the very same year, Wilson released “Cool Operator” which became the singer’s nickname. He died in March of 1995.
