The Manhattan Transfer Essentials

The Manhattan Transfer Essentials

Formed in 1969, this jazz vocal group offers a smoothly swinging recapitulation of American song in all its breadth. Bopping back and forth through history, the Transfer contemporised tunes like the Ink Spots' high-spirited ode to coffee, "Java Jive", as well as Sister Wynona Carr's ethereal gospel ode "Operator". The Transfer also excel at vocalese, the singing of lyrics set to instrumental solos, as exemplified by their exhilarating version of Weather Report's "Birdland". They also know their way around a novelty number, as shown by their hep rendition of the Twilight Zone theme.
