Editors’ Notes Stockholm's Yung Lean practically minted a new genre when his hazy breakthrough "Ginseng Strip 2002" broke through in 2013. Though clearly inspired by melodic strains of Southern trap-rap (Travis Scott was Lean’s first overseas collaborator), his songs feel distinctly Nordic: icy beats and crystalline synth running beneath melancholic singing, coldly spit rhymes, and a desolate outlook that splits the difference between nihilistic randomness and diaristic confession. That unique mix foretold the coming of emo rap, but even more remarkable is the fact that prolonged exposure to Lean’s chilly sound begets a powerful sense of warmth and catharsis.
