William Onyeabor Essentials

A revolutionary figure in Nigerian music, William Onyeabor was a highly singular creative force. On the exhilarating and sometimes astonishing albums he made in the ’70s and ’80s, he turbocharged traditional folk forms—as well as the Afrofunk made popular by his countryman Fela Kuti and American R&B and disco, too—with his pioneering use of synthesizers and drum machines. On insistently rhythmic tracks like “Atomic Bomb” and “Love Is Blind,” Onyeabor’s high-tech and Pan-African fusion of sounds and styles travels further and faster than even George Clinton’s mothership dared.
