Verzuz Cheat Sheet: T-Pain x Lil Jon

Both are Southern innovators; both have voices that’ve transcended the culture in their own very distinct and influential ways. Lil Jon was a crunk icon in the 2000s whose outsized presence and trademark yells—see: 2002’s “Get Low,” Usher’s “Yeah!” and DJ Snake’s 2013 crossover anthem “Turn Down for What”—made him a party-starting folk figure and the perfect subject for Dave Chappelle, whose impersonation elevated his profile to even more zeitgeisty heights. Discovered by Akon in the mid-2000s, T-Pain broke through with “I’m Sprung,” an R&B hit whose deft use of Auto-Tune was a sign of things to come: For the next decade plus, as Auto-Tune became omnipresent across pop, hip-hop, and R&B, T-Pain was its greatest practitioner and a fixture atop the charts—from his own “Buy U a Drank (Shawty Snappin’)” to major collaborations with Kanye (“Good Life”) and Pitbull (“Hey Baby [Drop It to the Floor]”). That he was unveiled as the Season 1 winner of Fox’s Masked Singer was, in the end, a surprise to no one: With or without Auto-Tune, nobody doubts his voice. T-Pain’s and Lil Jon’s hits may have been hard to escape, but their discographies go much deeper than that; be sure and get the full brunt of their catalogs by way of the official Lil Jon and T-Pain Cheat Sheet playlist, curated by Apple Music host Lowkey.
