Editors’ Notes This is an orchestra for the eccentrics. Though born in '80s New Zealand, founder Ruban Nielson looks to '60s England for inspiration. Hints of Paul McCartney, The Kinks, and The Zombies swirl around in Unknown Mortal Orchestra's lo-fi mix of precious pop and eerie psychedelic rock, while Syd Barrett's warped sense of a hook haunts throughout. Double-tracked vocals make the songs float even higher, but menacing, snaking guitars give them all some necessary weight. Welcome touches of soul and funk make it all a little more groovy.
