Every country needs a pop music sovereign, and charismatic Roberto Carlos was Brazil's Elvis. As leader of the mid-'60s Young Guard movement, Carlos wrote teen-targeted "iê-iê-iê" songs often inspired by North American hits of the '50s and '60s. Along with his forays into funk and soul, Carlos's many chart successes sparked terrific cover versions by younger stars.
