Uncle Tupelo Essentials

Uncle Tupelo formed in Illinois in '87, after Jeff Tweedy, Jay Farrar, and Mike Heidorn decided to swap the punk of their previous outfit, The Primitives, for alt-country. Their debut album, '90's No Depression, met with solid buzz but low sales. More influential than commercially successful, the group would record three more acclaimed LPs, the last of which, Anodyne, was their major label debut. Acrimony between Tweedy and Farrar led to the band's dissolution soon after, with the former going on to found Wilco as the latter stayed closer to the fringes with his band Son Volt.
