One of the many valuable byproducts of long jazz careers is the legacy of mentorship. Vocalist Betty Carter's cadre of protégés, including both the keyboardist Jacky Terrasson and the post-bop saxophonist J.D. Allen, is one of jazz's most impressive retinues. Their unique interpretations of standards—and the songful quality of their performances—suggest just how much they learned from Carter.
