Trojan Records: Classic Rocksteady

Apple Music

In the late '60s, the rocksteady sound was slowly changing into what would become known as reggae, and British imprint Trojan Records facilitated this transition by introducing classic singles like The Paragons' “The Tide Is High” (famously covered by Blondie in 1980) and Alton Ellis' “Rock Steady” to U.K. and U.S. audiences. Trojan would also license lesser-known gems by rocksteady stars like The Gaylads and The Melodians, and by figures who would go on to become reggae and dub legends, like Lee Perry and Ken Boothe.
