“Annoyingly, all the good things you’re advised to do actually help,” Tolly T tells Apple Music about how she—as a writer and the co-host of the hit The Receipts Podcast—ensures she keeps her stress levels in check. “Yes, it is tempting to just bed rot, and we can’t act like we’re above that, but going outside for a walk and touching grass…going to bed early, exercising—it all actually works.” But the other surefire way to relax and reflect for Tolly (real name Tolani Shoneye) and her co-host Audrey Indome is listening to the right music. “For the two or three minutes that a song is playing, it can change your mood, and as if by magic, it can ease stress,” she says. Here, then, are the songs the duo turn to when they need to find a moment of calm—and they come from artists including Justin Bieber, Q-Tip, Drake, George Michael, and Laufey. The brief isn’t “calm” music, but a genreless lineup of “familiar” sounds that “evoke a feeling.” “Our song choices are so varied,” says Tolly. “Yes, sometimes it’s a slow song that helps you to feel calm, but at times, relaxing and reflection sounds like Q-Tip reminding you that you’re a special girl, a real good girl.” There is one song in particular, though, that has proven something of a guiding light: Jhené Aiko’s “Ascension” featuring Brandy. “It is a great track for meditation and deep thought,” says Tolly. “The song asks big questions like: ‘What do you do it for? What are you running for? What are you trying to prove? What is the path you choose?’ The song feels like it is helping you run to the light at the end of the tunnel. It encourages you to get back on the right path and makes you feel OK about still having things to work out. It’s a reminder that it’s actually all going to be OK.” And if you still need some advice on how to really forget the frazzle, Tolly has a final word: “May we suggest The Receipts Podcast and a rogue tip: fake laugh. Honestly, fake laugh—somehow it always leads to a real laugh.”
