Tim Reaper Essentials

Tim Reaper might have been born in the wrong era: His DJ sets and productions alike are note-perfect evocations of early-’90s jungle that, heard blindfolded, could easily pass for golden-age classics. But then, if he’d been born any earlier, he might not be the ambassador he is, carrying the genre’s torch for a new generation of breakbeat worshippers. Reaper (East London’s Ed Alloh) was born in the early ‘90s, just as jungle was morphing into drum ‘n’ bass; by age 17, he was putting out his own tracks, beginning a wildly prolific run that has only accelerated over the years. His DJ sets are flush with unreleased dubplates and vintage obscurities, making them feel like time machines where different temporalities collide. No wonder his club nights and record label are called Future Retro London: In Reaper’s hands, old-school jungle sounds timeless.
