Editors’ Notes Even if you don't know The Coasters, you probably remember the catchphrase from their hit “Charlie Brown”—"Why's everybody always pickin' on me?” That song embodied their hip sense of humor, tailor-made for the Los Angeles group by the ace songwriting team of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. While some of their hits were sendups of high-school melodrama, others—like “Little Egypt,” about a stripper—were decidedly grown-up. Mixing up the soulfulness of R&B with the vocal acrobatics of doo-wop, The Coasters and their writer/producers knew what made kids go wild.
