In the '80s, when the charts were dominated by synthesisers and drum machines, the Stray Cats busted through with something new by reaching back to the '50s for their cues. The raucous rockabilly stomp of their breakthrough 1981 hit, "Rock This Town", and the finger-snapping bop of their follow-up smash, the sinuous cool-cat anthem "Stray Cat Strut", were at odds with everything else in the Top 40 at the time. But their combination of retro quiffs-and-denim cool and brash, young energy made them a movement unto themselves.
