Steve Winwood Essentials

When Steve Winwood joined the Spencer Davis Group in 1963, word got around about a 15-year-old English kid who played keyboards and sang like Ray Charles. That voice fueled two hit singles, but at 19 Winwood got restless and formed the progressive band Traffic. Between stints with that band he joined Eric Clapton in the short-lived supergroup Blind Faith. The '80s gave Winwood a slicker image with beer commercials and the glossier Back in the High Life. But his work in the '00s has returned to his free-flowing Traffic roots, plus a reunion with Clapton.
