Spring Heel Jack Essentials
Apple Music
John Coxon was a space-rock guitarist and Ashley Wales was a dance-pop producer. So naturally, when they got together in 1993 as Spring Heel Jack, the pair decided to create gorgeously atmospheric drum 'n' bass. By the early 2000s, the U.K. duo had begun to move in a more experimental direction, and they soon ditched jungle rhythms for avant-garde jazz. Working with musicians like bassist William Parker and saxophonist Evan Parker, Spring Heel Jack used cutting-edge digital technology to take the expansive and exploratory sound of free jazz in radical new directions for the 21st century.
