Doom is the genre that makes the most sense for Spirit Adrift. Since their founding in 2015 by multi-instrumentalist Nate Garrett (also of Gatecreeper), the band have unleashed a procession of funereal riffs and wails tormented by the cosmic battle between good and evil. But as with so many doom outfits in the 21st century, their music has no use for purity tests. Their heavy use of clean, sinewy guitar lines reflects Garrett’s love of progressive metal. Then there are the Metallica-inspired thrash moves that come into their own on 2019’s Divided by Darkness, a huge-sounding album with the epic scope of classic heavy metal.
