K-pop group Spica blends retro pop sounds with modern electronic touches. Formed in 2012, the quintet caught looks right out of the gate with the midtempo pop number “Doggedly,” and then dug through the popular music attic for older elements to add. Alongside throwbacks including big brassy horn sections (“You Don't Love Me”) and breezy ‘90s R&B nods (“I'll Be There”), they also work in contemporary touches, such as fizzy keyboard notes (“Russian Roulette”) and dance-indebted beats (“Secret Time”). Crucial to all of their songs are catchy hooks and all-together-now vocals.
