Scientist Essentials

Overton Brown got his start repairing electronics in dub pioneer King Tubby's studio; his mentor dubbed him Scientist as much for his sonic daring as for his soldering skills. His ‘80s recordings helped define dub as a form of deconstruction, stripping reggae to its foundations. “Drum Song Dub” applies a subtly psychedelic touch to a Jackie Mittoo classic, while the electrifying zaps of “Chemistry” highlight his otherworldly drum sounds. “East of Scientist Corner (II Pieces),” a far-out collage experiment, careens across the stereo field as delay feedback ripples into outer space.
