Bob James never intended to create a hip-hop landmark when he penned the smooth-jazz cut “Nautilus” in 1974. Rescued from the dollar bins in the ‘80s by New York City beatmakers, the song has since been sampled, cut, and twisted in every imaginable fashion. Sometimes haunting, sometimes violent, it's become a hip-hop insignia, a touchstone on which each generation of rappers leaves its mark.
