Ruel’s “ok we should head home” Playlist

“I think it’s perfect for someone who’s driving back from a road trip that takes about two hours,” singer-songwriter Ruel tells Apple Music of his playlist, carefully timed and sequenced to get you home. “You left when the sun was still up,” he says, “but by the time you get home, it’s dark and quiet. Each songs flows into another emotion, starting with more punchy, driving tempos that put you in a good mood, then fading into more somber, chilled vibes that represent the end of something—the trip. These are the songs I’ve been listening to when I drive, so it was really fun making a story out of all of them.” Listen—without shuffling the order—and read on for more about a few of Ruel’s picks. Phoebe Bridgers, “Kyoto” “I think this song perfectly starts the playlist because it really sets the scene. It feels like the start of something. If you’re in a good mood, this tempo and time signature feels so good to get in the car and drive to.” Cub Sport, “Drive” “This song is where the mood starts to change a little more dramatically. Cub Sport are so good at making songs you want to cry to but still make you feel happy. There is such a huge feeling of hope in this song, but it’s contrasted with how sad the melodies and production are. This one really sets up the next chunk of the playlist when it gets into proper depresso mode.” DOPE LEMON & Winston Surfshirt, “Every Day Is a Holiday” “I always find myself getting lost in this song. I feel like I could play it on repeat for hours and not realize I’ve played it more than once. It’s got such an earnest and loving tone to it, but then again, I could cry my eyes out to it.” Phoebe Bridgers, “I Know the End” “I thought the idea of starting and finishing the playlist with the same artist felt cool, especially because of how much of a grand finale this is to Phoebe Bridgers’ album Punisher. This song is so epic—there’s not really much else I can say. The outro is so triumphant and satisfying, yet eerie and haunting at the same time. I love it, I love it, I love it.”
