Power pop has rarely sounded as effortless and joyful as it does in the songs of Rooney's Robert Schwartzman. His sardonic, Beatles-y melodies and gossamer Beach Boys harmonies are arranged with Queen's bullish sense of adventure and bolstered with a perky Motown rhythmic bounce and layers of Weezer-strength, breezeblock guitars. That's the thrilling and hearty sonic base from which Schwartzman can tell his tales about the disorienting effects of love, and ably zigzag between lyrical sincerity and deft comedy in a winningly giddy fashion.
