Roland Kirk: Next Steps

Roland Kirk: Next Steps

Kirk was known for his ability to adapt tunes from different genres into the same flowing program. On “March On, Swan Lake,” he used a Tchaikovsky motif as the launching point for a solo full of blues, and when rearranging the R&B hook of Bill Withers' “Ain't No Sunshine,” Kirk made sure to leave plenty of room for his singsong flute style full of hums and vocalizations.
