Redd Kross: Essentials

Redd Kross: Essentials

Redd Kross ringleaders Jeff and Steve McDonald may have been products of the late-'70s L.A. hardcore scene, but their idea of punk was to reject the stern orthodoxies of punk. On early releases, they went dumpster-diving in pop culture's trash heap, delivering cheeky, garage-damaged mash notes to faded teen icons like Annette Funicello and Linda Blair. But their Me Decade invocations would turn more sincere: “1976” boasts wood-paneled rec-room riffs, gilded harmonies, and a spot-on Paul Stanley impression. After a 15-year hiatus, Redd Kross resurfaced in 2012, showing an undiminished flair for pristine power pop on “Stay Away from Downtown.”
