Rock, jazz, soul, and R&B spread out across the world, inspiring artists to create new hybrids of traditional folk and pop sounds with these new styles. Southeast Asia—including Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Cambodia, Myanmar, and the Philippines—was particularly fruitful at creating music that feels simultaneously familiar and uniquely strange.
