When it comes to displays of acerbic wit, Randy Newman has few peers—and “Short People” and “I Love L.A.” are just the most widely heard examples. Yet the warmth, empathy, and emotional richness in Newman’s music often get less attention. That’s why it’s always great to hear what other performers bring out of his songs, whether it’s the vulnerability Dusty Springfield expresses in the ballad “I Don’t Want to Hear It Anymore” or Joe Cocker's bravado on “You Can Leave Your Hat On.”
