Around the world, queer people of all stripes experienced an increasing level of social acceptance in the new millennium; same-sex marriage became increasingly common in many countries, and in others, decriminalization led to destigmatization. In short, queer rights came to be seen as human rights. And the decade's music—from Scissor Sisters' transgressive dance pop to Tegan and Sara's increasingly adventurous indie pop—seemed to mirror the growth in awareness and visibility.
