EDITORS’ NOTES

Portishead released just three studio albums between 1994 and 2008, but their slim catalog is packed with dark gems. Their first record helped invent trip-hop, combining moody hip-hop beats with Beth Gibbons' mournful torch singing, but the Bristol band kept moving forward, branching out into art-rock and industrial textures. And unlike many electronic acts, they mastered concert presentations on 1998's Roseland NYC Live, complete with lush orchestral backing.
