Nakhane's Sublime Summer

Renowned singer-songwriter Nakhane puts as much care into his summer playlist as he does crafting lyrics. “South Africans are not very good with spring and autumn,” Nakhane explains to Apple Music. “From my experience, our recognition of seasons is solely based on winter and summer. Two extremes. The subtleties of autumn and spring are in the way people dress and the way the go out. Let’s look at spring to summer—the clothes from September onwards become less cumbersome, libidos are stoked by the heat, the drinks are colder, people laugh louder in the streets. Afternoon drinking becomes more ubiquitous, and so the music blares out of doors or rooftops. I’ve compiled a playlist that I hope can be blared from the punishing sun of noon till the hot evening where the velvet ropes are brought out and the glitter shines, and in the wee hours of the morning when speech is slurred and Uber drivers are begged for auxiliary cables on the way home. Subject matter is mixed. As far as I have known, dark subject matter has never stopped a song from being loved, as long as it has an addictive hook.”
