The Canadian/Japanese quartet MONKEY MAJIK evokes myriad moods using a simple mix of guitar—acoustic or electric—and hip-hop-influenced beats. The band can create downtempo coffeehouse folk accented by melancholy rap (“Delayed”) or conjure inspiring folk-pop with uplifting choruses (“You Are Not Alone”). And sometimes they throw a real curveball, as in sleazy rock songs like “Disco Girl.”
