Milk & Bone Essentials

When Laurence Lafond-Beaulne and Camille Poliquin dropped their 2015 debut, Little Mourning, the album’s youthful romance—and melancholy, too—made it a perfect fit for fans of dreamy synth acts like Purity Ring and The xx. At the same time, the Montreal duo’s refined electro-pop arrangements and expertly layered vocals (they opt to sing in English) spoke to Lafond-Beaulne and Poliquin’s formal training. In addition to studying music at Cégep de Saint-Laurent, the multi-instrumentalists tackled session and tour work before formalizing their partnership in 2013, thanks in no small part to a shared love of jazz artist Chet Baker’s aching ballads. The 2018 release Deception Bay and its subtly more upbeat 2022 successor, Chrysalism, add shades of R&B as well as piano and ambient textures, proving the two can retain their trademark spareness while also exploring new sounds and ideas.
