Marlon Williams Essentials

So pure and lonesome is Marlon Williams’ natural tenor that Bradley Cooper tapped him to front a Roy Orbison tribute act in the 2018 film A Star Is Born. The New Zealand singer/songwriter has wielded those otherworldly vocals to mesmerizing effect since the early 2010s, often entwined with reverbed twang in service of a gothic country-folk ballad (see 2015’s haunting “Dark Child”). But Williams can play it lighter, too, as heard on his team-up with Canadian duo Kacy & Clayton on 2020’s pining yet surprisingly breezy Plastic Bouquet. He has even sung in te reo Māori across several collaborations, including “Te Whakaroha Nui” with legendary cellist Yo-Yo Ma.
