Editors’ Notes Maribou State's early singles fleshed out rippling, bass-heavy UK garage grooves with ribbons of sped-up vocals and sparkling steel drums. But with their debut album, 2015's Portraits, the UK duo turned its ear for texture toward an even more enveloping sound, trading club energy for after-hours reverie. Replacing samples with actual singers (the mournful “Steal,” featuring Holly Walker) has allowed them to flex their songwriting muscles, while 2018's Kingdoms in Colour opens up even further, adorning intricate instrumental interplay with captivating world-music accents.
