London Grammar Essentials

London Grammar create an ornate and unexpectedly hopeful hybrid of gospel and indie pop from utter despair. The heartbreak in Hannah Reid's plaintive voice is carried respectfully aloft by tiny musical motifs—a delicately plucked guitar, stately piano chords, quietly insistent drum rolls—and wrapped in a soft wash of strings and reverberant noise. “Strong” and “Wasting My Young Years,” both from their 2013 debut album, If You Wait, mine the depths of melancholy and introspection in the aftermath of love gone bad, while “Hey Now” and “Oh Woman Oh Man” spin the coin, pondering what life will be like if desire remains unanswered.
