Let's get it out of the way first—yes, Liam Finn is the son of Neil Finn from Split Enz and Crowded House. But Finn is his own man. On his 2007 debut I'll Be Lightning he played most of the instruments himself, on songs that recalled everything from The Beach Boys to Elliott Smith, as he put an indie twist on '60s classic rock. Psychedelia entered the picture on follow-up FOMO, along with electronic bleeps and some wild percussion. Finn has inherited the family knack for wistful melodies, but he's bringing his own stamp to his sound by experimenting with the pop form.
