Laika / Moonshake Essentials

Formed in 1991, Moonshake were one of the more adventurous groups to appear in the midst of the Britpop/shoegaze scene. Taking their name and sonic influence from Can, guitarist Dave Callahan and singer Margaret Fielder aimed to meld the ethereal and the ugly into one rhythm-heavy whole with touches of hip-hop, post-punk, and dub coloring the edges. After the release of a few acclaimed albums and singles, Fiedler quit the band to form Laika, a duo that delved into techno and trip-hop, achieving worldwide acclaim thanks to efforts like 2000's cult classic Silver Apples of the Moon.
