Kylesa Essentials

Roaring out of Georgia in 2001, Kylesa played a furious combination of distortion-soaked sludge metal and chaotic hardcore punk, but their grimy and aggressive attack quickly gave way to a sound that was more expansive and experimental. On boundary-pushing albums like 2010's Spiral Shadow and 2013's Ultraviolet, these southern heroes mixed crushingly heavy riffs with complex prog arrangements, and while their pummeling grooves are still rooted in classic sludge, Kylesa are just as likely to build their songs around an overwhelming squall of psych-rock guitar noise.
