When Michael Mayer, Wolfgang Voigt, and Jürgen Paape launched Kompakt in 1998, they sparked a big bang whose ripples are still coursing across the electronic universe. While the founders turned out minimalist bangers, Closer Musik and Superpitcher dealt in sultry synth pop, Justus Köhncke revived Italo disco, and Dettinger and Jonas Bering headed for ambient music's outer limits.
