When Kittie debuted in 1996, the world wasn’t quite ready for four teenage girls from London, Ontario who thrust post-grunge alt-rock into the nu-metal age. Anchored by singer/guitarist Morgan Lander and her drumming sister Mercedes, Kittie brought a new degree of aggression to the mosh pit via ragers like “Brackish” where melodic verses give way to a blood-curdling chorus. They only got nastier from there: On 2001’s Oracle, Morgan wielded a death-metal growl like a flamethrower, and by 2009’s “Cut Throat”, Kittie had mutated into a full-bore demonic thrash band. Kittie fell silent for much of the 2010s—maybe they were just waiting for the rest of the world to play catch up.
