Jonathan McReynolds Essentials
If Jonathan McReynolds were a secular artist, his throwback sound would fit right in with the neo-soul crowd. A hit like 2020’s “Movin’ On” is an absolute joy: tastefully crafted gospel that layers classic Stevie Wonder-style hooks and ’70s organ licks atop a bubbling funk groove. In addition to boasting impeccable musicianship (the Chicagoan plays at least three instruments and teaches music at the collegiate level), he’s a sympathetic composer. Right from the release of his 2012 debut, Life Music, it was clear that McReynolds pens deeply personal songs that speak to the daily triumphs and challenges of 21st-century Christians.
