John Scofield's jazz fusion immediately gratifies with its blend of rock and funk moves, but the guitarist is also an intrepid explorer. His solos can turn aggressive as he emits shrapnel-like tonal clusters (“Pretty Out”), and his novel use of texture features effects that evoke a sense of psychedelia (“Acidhead”). As for his composing, even when grounded in melody (“Loud Jazz”), he leaves plenty of space for complexly layered improvisation.
