Joey Alexander Essentials

Considering the deep engagement of jazz with its own history, it’s not surprising that Indonesian wunderkind pianist Joey Alexander encountered scepticism when he dropped his debut album at age 11 in 2015. Alexander’s playing has since silenced those voices. Though his earliest work featured mostly jazz standards, he also delivered a bold expansion of John Coltrane’s “Giant Steps” that was especially impressive given his youth. He took on the complex repertoire of Thelonious Monk with a live solo album, deftly replacing the rhythm section with only his own nimble hands. He’s since emerged as a skilled composer, exploring more romantic, modernistic arrangements and shapes on his 2022 album Origin.
