EDITORS’ NOTES

A Russian-born Jewish American, Irving Berlin wrote what may be the world's most beloved Christmas song, along with one of the most stirring patriotic anthems. Born in 1888, he made his first major contribution to the American songbook when he penned “Alexander's Ragtime Band” at age 23. A lover of the theater, Berlin wrote many of his greatest songs for Broadway shows and Hollywood movies. His 1942 musical This is the Army starred Ronald Reagan and introduced “God Bless America,” sung by Kate Smith. The 1942 movie Holiday Inn not only introduced Bing Crosby's rendition of “White Christmas” but featured another seasonal Berlin gem, “Easter Parade.” His estimated 1500 songs include many other standards, with Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra and Billie Holiday among the greats who've sung them.
