Inspired by Arthur Russell

New York's Arthur Russell was both a disco producer and an avant-garde composer, and the Downtown icon split his time between The Paradise Garage and art spaces like The Kitchen. During his brief, incredibly fruitful career, his recordings encompassed funk, minimalism, folk, and oddball pop. His club sides remain his main legacy, trickling down to everyone from Todd Terry and Masters at Work to Carl Craig and Ricardo Villalobos. But his work as an offbeat singer/songwriter has had a major impact on a host of modern indie artists, including Panda Bear, Hot Chip, Owen Pallett, and many others.
