Centered on the core duo of singer/guitarist Husky Gawenda and keyboardist Gideon Preiss (who are also cousins), Husky has glided gracefully through harmony-laden folk, close-knit power pop and daydreamy indie pop over the years. A humble upload of their 2011 single “History’s Door” to triple j’s Unearthed platform sparked a surge of interest that led to the Melbourne band releasing their home-recorded debut album Forever So in Australia that same year—and then again via the iconic Seattle indie label Sub Pop in 2012. The pair struck gold again with 2014’s “Saint Joan,” winning the Vanda & Young Global Songwriting Competition while showcasing a fuller, more driving sound that still had an ear bent towards classic Laurel Canyon folk rock. Gawenda’s soft, inviting vocals work just as well over the propulsive romance of 2016’s “Last Night Store” as they do against the stately arrangements and sleepy liminal state of 2020’s “Wristwatch.” As Preiss has increasingly busied himself with production and composing work, Gawenda has dabbled in solo work that circles back to the homespun intimacy of that first upload; observe the sun-dappled fingerpicking of 2025’s “Insect Bite.”
