Like so many teenagers, Melbourne’s Hayden Calnin picked up a guitar and started working out how to play. He hasn’t stopped tinkering since, and his catalog showcases his prowess as a producer, multi-instrumentalist, and singer-songwriter alike. That holistic approach only adds to the intimate, self-contained feeling of his work, as if Calnin is inviting us into the private soundworlds he creates from top to bottom. Such early work as 2012’s “For My Help” drew upon recent forebears like Bon Iver and James Blake while letting those big, expressive vocals shine against sparse yet dramatic percussion. Calnin has since explored the possibilities of layering more and more in his music, from the fleeting backing vocals and programmed beat in 2014’s “Comatose” to the lush Americana motifs floating across 2019’s “Warm with You.” He took those practices to even greater heights on 2022’s “Unfortunate Love,” applying delicate flights of orchestration to a simmering duet with kindred spirit (and friend) Harrison Storm. Yet, for all of those bravura arrangements, Calnin always comes back around to small moments of emotional clarity lodged in ripe open space: On 2025’s “Alright Now,” he drops down to nearly a whisper to promise, “I am still right here.”
