Harper's Bazaar: The Playlist by King Princess

Harper's Bazaar: The Playlist by King Princess

If fashion and music go hand in hand—and of course they do—then think of playlists like a wardrobe, personally curated and deeply reflective of the wearer’s lifestyle, outlook, and more. This particular one shows the uplifting stylings of pop savant Mikaela Straus, better known as King Princess, the musical director of the February issue of iconic fashion magazine Harper’s Bazaar, which is partnering with Apple Music for a series of playlists curated by different musicians. Here, the 22-year-old Brooklyn native highlights cuts that celebrate community, ranging from electro-pop legend Róisín Murphy’s dance track “Murphy’s Law” to T. Rex’s glam-rock showstopper “Cosmic Dancer.” “I don’t feel I exist in one specific community. Whether you’re gay or straight, regardless of who you are—we can all get down to certain songs, and we can all see the beauty in certain things,” King Princess says. “That’s really what this playlist is about—friendship and not needing to be the same to be united.” Her powerful playlist also includes modern pop heavy hitters like Florence + the Machine's “Grace” and Lady Gaga's “Hey Girl,” on which Florence features. “I love the sisterhood of the two of them singing together,” King Princess explains. “It’s very sweet.” With each issue of Harper’s Bazaar, there will be a new playlist, available only on Apple Music, with picks by their latest musical director, so stay tuned.
