The lovably deranged GWAR amassed a ton of far-out influences while developing their splatter-soaked mixture of heavy metal, punk and hard rock in the late ’80s. The darkly surreal experimentation of Butthole Surfers and Mr. Bungle certainly informed GWAR’s transgressive subject matter and vulgar theatrics. Fast and catchy punks like the Ramones and All also played big roles, instilling in these scumdogs a love of ripping guitars and hooks.
